It was July 2017 when Jose Ruiz realized that his Shar-Pei and Rottweiler mix, Junior, was missing. He immediately began searching for him, even posting flyers and photos of his dog on social media. Fortunately, a kind citizen had already notified the local fire station of a dog struggling to swim in Biscayne Bay.
Emilio Sanchez and his team rushed to the scene and found Junior 25 yards away, paddling for his life. Without hesitation, Sanchez jumped into the water to rescue the dog.
Reporters captured the heroic moment of Sanchez carrying the big dog on his shoulders and swimming back to his team who prepared a backboard for the dog to climb on.
“He was very exhausted, just by the way he was breathing, and he was already barely able to keep his head up out of the water,” Sanchez shared with Miami-based newspaper WPLG.
A heartwarming reunion and gratitude expressed
Thanks to Sanchez’s heroic act, Junior’s life was saved. An hour after the rescue, Junior was reunited with his owner at the local City Hall. Ruiz hugged his dog as he sobbed with joyful tears.
Sanchez’s brave actions captured the world’s attention, and he received lots of praise and gratitude for his efforts.
Sanchez humbly stated that it was all part of his job, saying, “Any life is important in the eyes of the fire department here.”
