Survivor Stories: The harsh reality of dogfighting and its impact on canine victims

Former dogfighting victims learn what it means to be loved

Dogfighting is a brutal and illegal blood sport that has been a persistent issue in many parts of the world.

Unfortunately, the dogs involved in these fights often suffer severe physical and psychological trauma, leaving them with lifelong injuries and scars. However, there is hope for these canine victims.

Fiona and Rascal are two former dogfighting dogs who were rescued, rehabilitated, and given a second chance at life. Their inspiring story serves as a reminder of the resilience and capacity for love of these incredible animals.

Fiona and Rascal’s rescue: a second chance at life

Today’s story is about the rescue and recovery of Fiona and Rascal, two dogs that were rescued from a dogfighting ring. The ASPCA assisted with the removal of 89 dogs from the dogfighting ring across Long Island, New York City, and in several other states.

Overcoming trauma: the rehabilitation process for former dogfighting dogs

Fiona and Rascal were found displaying signs of extreme fear and were transported to the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, Ohio, for ongoing medical and behavioral care.

The behavior team at the center worked on confidence building by associating things that the dogs enjoyed with things that they were scared of.

After roughly three months of rehabilitation, Fiona and Rascal had become completely different dogs. Fiona had grown immensely, and she even became a helper dog for other fearful canines.

Though both dogs were still somewhat fearful, the two were ready to be companion animals. They were ready to be adopted by a loving family.

Finding a forever home: how one caregiver gave Fiona and Rascal a new lease on life

Becky Spohn, the Senior Manager of Facilities at the ASPCA, had just begun her job when Fiona and Rascal were rescued.

She was searching for a pair of medium or large-sized dogs to take hiking, go on long walks, and cuddle on the couch with.

She found Rascal, and it was love at first sight for both of them. Jessi Henry, Senior Manager of Animal Behavior, introduced Becky to Fiona, and they became friends.

Becky adopted Rascal and Fiona one day before Thanksgiving and she changed Fiona’s name to Arya.

Arya and Rascal’s transition to their new home was tough, and Arya was afraid of everything, including Becky. She spent most of her time running outside, but with time and patience, both dogs adjusted to their new life.

They learned what it means to be loved and to be part of a family. Becky’s home is now filled with love, laughter, and the pitter-patter of four paws.
