The man that rescues dogs: a haven for Thailand’s strays and special needs animals

Learn about the wonderful Thai animal shelter that gives disabled pups a new lease on life

In a world often consumed by distressing news, it’s heartwarming to hear stories of compassion and kindness that restore our faith in humanity. Amidst the streets of Thailand, where homeless animals receive little care, one man’s dedication to their well-being shines brightly.

Today’s story’s source comes directly from tmtrd.org and presents Michael J. Baines, the President and Co-Founder of The Man That Rescues Dogs (TMTRD), an animal welfare organization based in Chon Buri, Thailand.

With unwavering determination, Michael and his team have transformed the lives of over 2,000 animals, offering them a second chance at happiness and finding them loving homes.

A beacon of hope

While the global distress has led to countless animals being abandoned or left without homes, Thailand faces a unique challenge.

The Thai culture traditionally lacks interaction with homeless animals, making their plight all the more challenging. However, within this context, Michael J. Baines emerged as a beacon of hope, determined to make a difference.

Michael’s journey

Originally from Sweden, Michael moved to Thailand in 2002 and opened a restaurant in Bangsaen.

It didn’t take long for him to notice the dire conditions of the stray dogs he encountered on the streets daily. In his free time, Michael began to help these animals, providing them with food, medical treatment, and even transporting injured dogs to local veterinary clinics.

Eventually, his efforts grew into a full-fledged rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming operation.

The birth of TMTRD

Through unwavering dedication, Michael transformed his humble initiative into The Man That Rescues Dogs Foundation, a registered nonprofit organization.

Today, the sanctuary enjoys support from the local government, with the invaluable partnership of Narongchai Khunpluem, the Mayor of Saensuk.

With their collective efforts, the foundation aims to expand the sanctuary’s capacity to rescue more animals and enhance their clinic’s capabilities to provide comprehensive care.

Specializing in second chances

What sets TMTRD apart is its focus on rescuing animals with specific needs.

The sanctuary specializes in rehabilitating injured animals, giving them the opportunity for a new lease on life. From dogs with mobility challenges to cats in need of critical medical attention, every creature finds a safe space at TMTRD.

With 30 staff members, they work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of the shelter’s 600 animals. Dealing not only with rescued dogs and cats but also unanticipated crises, their work demands immense flexibility and compassion.

A day at the sanctuary

Each day at TMTRD begins with a 6 a.m. walk for all the animals, including those in wheelchairs.

Following the stroll, a nutritious meal awaits them, accompanied by ample time for rest and cleanliness. The shelter’s commitment extends beyond its walls, with a food truck departing at 7 a.m. to feed the community’s 350 homeless dogs.

Additionally, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy sessions at 10 a.m. provide much-needed exercise for the impaired canines. The day concludes with another walk, feeding, and bathing for the dogs.

TMTRD’s vision stretches far beyond the sanctuary’s walls. The organization aims to make a lasting impact through education, visiting schools and public spaces to raise awareness about animal welfare.
